The Core Question: Repair or Replace?
Your computer is slow, crashing, or broken. Now you face a decision most people find surprisingly difficult: pay to fix it, or buy a new one? There’s no universal right answer — but there’s a framework that makes the decision much clearer.
The 50% Rule
A widely used guideline: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a comparable replacement, buy new. If it’s less than 50%, repair is usually the smarter financial move. Example: if your 3-year-old laptop needs a screen replacement that costs less than half of what a comparable new laptop would cost, repair wins easily.
When Computer Repair Makes Sense
- The computer is 4 years old or newer — Modern hardware has plenty of life left at this age.
- It’s a single, clearly defined problem — Bad hard drive, dead screen, failing battery. One fix equals problem solved.
- You have important software or workflows — Migrating to a new computer takes 4-8 hours of setup time.
- It’s a RAM or SSD upgrade — A simple SSD upgrade can make a 5-year-old computer feel brand new.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
- The computer is 6+ years old — The processor and RAM are likely too outdated to run modern software well.
- Multiple things are failing — If several components are struggling, each repair just buys a few more months.
- The repair cost approaches the value of the machine — Spending significant money on a low-value computer rarely makes sense.
- The hardware cannot run current software — No repair will solve an underlying performance problem caused by outdated hardware.
