Why Won’t My MacBook Turn On? 7 Things to Check Before You Panic

A MacBook that won’t turn on is one of the most stressful tech problems there is — but before you assume the worst, work through these checks. Most of the time, a MacBook not turning on comes down to one of a handful of causes, and several of them you can rule out yourself in a few minutes.

1. Dead or Drained Battery

The most common cause, by far. Plug the MacBook into its charger and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before trying to power it on again — a fully drained battery can take a little time before the Mac responds at all. Look for the amber charging light on the MagSafe connector (older models) or check that the charging port isn’t damaged or full of lint.

2. A Bad Charging Cable or Adapter

Cables and USB-C power adapters fail more often than the MacBook itself. If you have access to a second charger or cable, try it before assuming the problem is inside the machine.

3. Force Restart

On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1/M2/M3), press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black, then release and press it again to turn the Mac back on. On older Intel MacBooks, try Shift + Control + Option + the power button held together for 10 seconds, release, then press the power button normally. This clears a stuck boot process without touching any of your files.

4. A Stuck or Failed macOS Update

If the MacBook was mid-update when it stopped responding, it can appear completely dead while it’s actually still working through the install in the background. Leave it plugged in and untouched for at least 30-45 minutes before trying anything else — interrupting an update partway through is one of the few things that can turn a stuck update into a real problem.

5. A Black Screen That Isn’t Actually “Off”

Sometimes the Mac is powering on just fine, but the display isn’t. Signs to check: do you hear the startup chime or feel the fans spin up? Does the keyboard backlight turn on? If so, the machine is on and the problem is the display or its connection — a different (and usually less serious) repair than a Mac that’s truly not powering on at all.

6. Liquid Exposure or a Recent Drop

If the MacBook was near water, spilled on, or dropped recently, stop trying to power it on repeatedly — repeated attempts can worsen internal damage if there’s a short circuit. Let it dry out completely (at least 24 hours) before trying again, and if it still won’t turn on, this is a case for a professional diagnostic rather than more DIY attempts.

7. A Swollen or Failing Battery

Look closely at the bottom case — a battery that’s swelling can cause the trackpad to lift slightly or the case to bulge. A swollen battery is a safety issue, not just a power issue. Stop using the machine and get it looked at rather than continuing to try to charge or power it on.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Professional

If you’ve tried a force restart, confirmed the charger works, and given it time in case of a stuck update — and it’s still completely unresponsive — the cause is almost always hardware: a failed logic board, a dead battery that needs replacement, liquid damage, or (if you can hear it running but see nothing) a failed display that needs screen replacement. None of these are DIY-safe repairs on a MacBook’s sealed, tightly-packed internals.
